Fall / Winter Schedule

Winter Schedule: Normally, we wind down group classes in the Holiday season and start again in January. As we’ve mentioned before, this year will be a bit different with the new arrival due in February. As a result, we are still working on our schedule and may teach a few “mini” classes in December and/or early January. Keep an eye out on the website for updates on this. We know we will be taking a hiatus from teaching in February. We are tentatively planning to return to teaching group classes in some capacity in March or April.

With a new addition to the family, we will be revamping how we offer private lessons in 2012. Until then, we plan to keep teaching private lessons until the end of the year. Be sure to take advantage of them now before our schedule gets busy! We will go on hiatus from teaching private lessons at the start of the year and don’t plan to return until sometime after we start group classes again in March or April.

New Class Demo Video

The demo videos for our classes were looking a bit dated, so we decided to film a new one for our upcoming Lindy Hop and Charleston classes. You can view it by clicking on the image above, or you can watch the high definition version if you have the monitor space.

It’s nothing fancy. We just wanted to demo some of what we teach in both classes with a few options of what you can do with it. The way we filmed it was somewhat of an experiment. Both Dawn and I thought it came out looking pretty good! We’ll probably do some more videos in the near future. Keep an eye out.

New Series Classes Open!

Looking to get started with swing dancing? Starting Sunday, May 23rd, we’ll be offering our ever popular Lindy Hop Series Class! This class will cover all the essential moves and variations of the dance. It is designed to get you comfortable on the dance floor. It will start with the 6-count basic and progress into the 8-count swing out. Each week will build on the class before and take you step-by-step thought the dance. Click here for more info.

Also starting on May 23rd is the Balboa 2 Class. This class is a continuation of the Balboa class that wrapped up 3 weeks ago and is open to the public. This class is open to all dancers who already know the basics of Balboa. This six week series class is your chance to dig deep into the complexities that make Balboa such a fun yet challenging swing dance! New classes on the horizon

Just a quick note to let you know that we are working on the schedule and will be announcing our next set of classes shortly. As it looks now, the next series will probably start on May 23rd and will most likely include the ever popular Lindy Hop series class. We’re still in the planning stages, so be sure to check back here soon.

Also note, we’re planning to take a bit of a break this summer, so this will be the last set of series classes until we resume in the fall. That being said, if you are looking to join in on the classes, now is a great time!

Never danced swing before? Want to learn how?

That’s right, the next Sunday class in the 4pm time slot is the Swing Dance series class that starts in April. This is the ideal class if you have never danced before, or need to freshen up your 6 count swing basic or moves. The class is structured in a way that is very easy to follow with clear, concise communication in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.

This six-week class is designed to give you all the fundamentals of swing dancing, plus some great moves and variations. We will cover the 6-count swing dance basic and progress into a variety of moves, turns, and combos. The goal of this course is to make you a strong dancer that is knowledgeable and feels confident on the dance floor. Click here for more information.

January Classes

Swing Dance Series Class – Starting January 10th: This six-week series class is designed to give you all the fundamentals of swing dancing, plus some great moves and variations. The class will feature the 6-count swing dance basic and progress into a variety of moves, turns, and combos based off of it. The goal of the class is to make you a strong dancer that is knowledgeable and feels confident on the dance floor. To do this, the class will introduce solid lead/follow techniques and explain how the dance works as opposed to memorizing steps. From the basics, you will learn turning techniques, double turns, tuck turns, kicks, sugar pushes, and more. Click here for more information and registration.

Charleston Series Class – Also Starting January 10th: This six week class will take you from the basics of Charleston to a large variety of moves and variations! It will encompass 20’s style partner Charleston, Side-by-Side Charleston, Front/Back Charleston, and Savoy Kicks. It will show you how to integrate Charleston seamlessly into your dancing no matter what style of swing you dance (Lindy Hop, East Coast, Jitterbug, etc.). Late Summer/Fall Series Classes

Hot off the press… we just announced our upcoming late summer/fall series class schedule! For the first time this year, we will be offering two back-to-back Sunday afternoon series classes. For those looking to start out with swing dancing, we have the ever popular Swing Dance Series starting on Sept. 13th at 2:30pm. This six-week series is designed to give you all the fundamentals of swing dancing, plus some great moves and variations. Starting on the same day, but in the 4pm time slot, we will be offering our all new Lindy 2 Series. This is a new rendition of our intermediate Lindy class and is designed to take you from the Lindy Hop basics and progress your dancing to new levels. You don’t have to take our “Lindy 1″ course to sign up, but you do need to know the Lindy Hop basics. This is the first time we’ve offered a subject like this in over a year, so don’t miss out!

Lindy Hop Series Class Starting in August

Looking to get started with swing dancing? Come learn the original form of swing, the Lindy Hop. Starting August 2nd, this six-week series will cover all the essential moves and variations of Lindy Hop. The class will feature both the 6 and 8 count basics including the whip/swing out. There will be a strong concentration on technique and connection to give you a solid foundation in the dance. Each class will build upon information from the previous class to continuously further your knowledge week by week. Classes will be an hour long followed by a half hour of practice, questions, and individual help. Previous dance experience is helpful, but not required. No partner needed; individuals and couples welcome!

Guest instructing at the USO dance

Saturday, May 23rd: Dawn and I will be the special guest instructors for beginner lesson at the Memorial Day weekend USO dance. This will be the first time we have taught together at Whirl & Twirl since we transitioned the dances over at the end of last year. It’s also the first beginner lesson we have taught together since December. We’re both really looking forward to this dance as the Blusicians are one of our all time favorite bands to dance to. It will be great to see Dutch on stage again!

Also, don’t forget that we will be teaching an afternoon Charleston workshop the same day at the Longwood ballroom.

June Swing Dance Series Class

Our next series class is the Swing Dance Series Class starting on Sunday, June 14th. This class is great for people who have never danced before or for those who want to learn lots of moves using the 6 count triple step basic. The class starts with teaching the 6 count basic, then moves on to moves, turns, and combos including turning techniques, double turns, tuck turns, kicks, sugar pushes, and more. It is designed to give you an understanding of how the dance works and not just a memorization of steps. This will improve your dancing and give you confidence on the floor!
