Monday, April 16th, 2007

USO Dance with Kid DutchJoin us Memorial Day weekend (May 26th) for a special 4th Saturday “vintage USO” themed dance with live music by “Kid Dutch and his Blusicians“! If you come out dressed in vintage and/or military attire, you’ll get a ticket for a chance to win an iPod Shuffle. Special event admission is $10. In addition, Memorial day weekend is the 2nd annual Tampa/Orlando City Exchange. On Saturday night, the Tampa crowd comes to Orlando to dance… on Sunday night, we encourage all the Orlando dancers to make the hop across I4 to dance at Tampa’s Zendah Grotto. With no work/school on Monday, this will be a great weekend of dancing!

New Series Class Schedule

Monday, April 9th, 2007

As you may have heard us mention before, we have consolidated all of our series classes to Sunday afternoons. To reflect the change, the classes page of our site has been updated with all the new info. To kick off the new schedule, we will be offering an Intermediate Lindy Hop class (12:30 to 2pm) as well as the previously announced Swing Dance Series Class (2 to 3:30pm). The new classes will be starting May 13th. Registration for both is now open!

To our Sunday classes: For those in our Sunday afternoon classes (the Lindy Hop Series and Intermediate Lindy), don’t forget that this Sunday is Easter and there will not be any classes. Classes will resume their regular schedule next week (April 15th).

Safety and Aerials

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Pop culture has the simple formula “swing = aerials” stuck in their mind. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen couples attempt aerials on their first night out dancing. Fortunately, it has become an uncommon site in recent years. To watch someone untrained toss or get tossed into the air is quite simply scary. Aerials and tricks are a fun part of swing dancing, however, this article hitting national news today should be a warning. Know what you are doing before both of your feet or your partner’s feet leave the ground! Learn the basics of the dance first. Then learn all the ins and outs of the trick you are trying to attempt (including all the safety aspects). Aerials and tricks are just that… tricks. They never involve brute force “lift and throw”. For any move involving both feet leaving the ground, make sure you do them with a partner you have practiced the move with beforehand. Most ladies don’t like to find themselves suddenly airborne on the social dance floor. :)
